What Are Distressed Debtors?
Distressed Debtors are businesses that owe money to a company but are currently experiencing financial distress or an increased risk of insolvency.
Within Company Watch, distressed debtor risk is identified by matching a company’s trade debtors (sales ledger) against companies showing signs of financial distress.
This includes businesses that are:
- In Administration
- In Liquidation
- Showing high financial distress indicators based on Company Watch analytics
This process highlights debtors whose financial condition may affect their ability to repay outstanding balances.
Why Distressed Debtors Matter
Distressed debtors represent a potential credit risk and may impact a company’s financial stability.
Identifying these exposures early allows businesses to better manage counterparty risk and reduce potential bad debt.
Key Risks
-
Cash Flow Pressure
If a distressed customer fails or delays payment, expected cash inflows may not be realised.
-
Profit Impact
Outstanding receivables may need to be written off as bad debt, reducing reported profits.
-
Financial Contagion Risk
Failure of a significant customer can create financial pressure for the supplier, particularly if the exposure is large.
Using Distressed Debtors Data in Company Watch
Users can export the Distressed Debtors dataset to Excel from the Company Watch platform for further analysis of financial exposure.
This allows users to:
- Quantify potential bad debt exposure
- Identify high-risk customers
- Monitor changes in debtor financial status over time
Key Data Fields
- Distressed Debtor Name – The customer that owes money to the company
- Registration Number – The debtor’s Companies House registration number
- Debtor Status (Current) – The debtor’s latest financial status (e.g. Live – Financial Distress, Dissolved – Financial Distress)
- Amount (GBP) – The total amount owed by the debtor

Viewing Distressed Debtors in the Health Profile
Within the Company Watch Health Profile, a Distressed Debtors notification highlights potential exposure to financially distressed customers.
This insight should be reviewed alongside Creditors to assess overall financial risk:
- Creditors → Money the company owes to suppliers and other creditors
- Distressed Debtors → Money owed to the company by financially distressed customers
Monitoring both metrics provides a clearer picture of potential liquidity pressure and counterparty risk.
