Understanding Undisclosed Turnover in Data Builder

Why do some companies show no Sales/Turnover figure in Data Builder, and how should this be handled when filtering and exporting?

What is “undisclosed turnover”?

Company Watch sources all financial data directly from accounts filed at Companies House. Under UK accounting rules, companies below certain size thresholds are permitted to file abridged accounts — a balance sheet only, with no Profit & Loss statement. As Sales/Turnover is a P&L line item, it is simply never filed for these companies. This is what we mean by “undisclosed turnover”: the figure has not been reported, not that it is unknown to be zero.

Which companies are affected?

The two size categories permitted to file abridged accounts are:

Company type

Sales threshold

Also within one of

Small Company

Not exceeding £10.2m

£5.1m total assets, or 50 employees

Micro-Entity

Not exceeding £632k

£316k total assets, or 10 employees

A company qualifies if it does not exceed more than one of the relevant thresholds in a given category.

How is the Sales/Turnover field populated?

Company Watch only populates a field from what has been explicitly disclosed in the public filing. Where no P&L has been filed, the field is left blank (null) — it is not shown as zero, and not shown as “N/A”.

How null turnover behaves in filters

There is a distinction between how the field is displayed and how it is treated by the Revenue filter             in Data Builder. When a numeric range filter is applied — for example Revenue ≥ £0 and ≤ £Y — companies with a null (undisclosed) turnover are treated as £0 for the purposes of that filter, and so are included alongside companies that have genuinely reported £0 revenue.

  • A £0–£Y turnover filter will typically include companies with undisclosed revenue as well as those with genuinely low reported revenue.
  • If you need to exclude companies with undisclosed revenue, add the Accounts → General → P&L Statement filter. This restricts results to companies that have actually filed a Profit & Loss statement, removing companies where turnover is unavailable because no P&L was filed.

 Data Builder - Key takeaways

  • Filters treat null as £0: a £0–£Y Revenue filter will include undisclosed-revenue companies by default.
  • Use the P&L Statement filter to separate companies that have filed a P&L from those that have not.
  • For large or multi-criteria exports that risk exceeding the 40,000 daily export limit, a bespoke search via your Account Manager avoids duplicate or incomplete extracts.
